Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted on Monday on two dozen federal charges of corruption and bribery during his seven year term according to Reuters.
Kilpatrick, 42, his father, and a city contractor were accused of widespread corruption, extorting bribes from contractors who wanted to get or keep city contracts, and for turning the mayor's office into "Kilpatrick Incorporated" in 2002 until 2008.
The 12 jurors, who took 14 days to decide his fate from February in a District Court trial that began in Sept. 2012, found Kilpatrick guilty of racketeering, extortion, mail and wire fraud, tax charges and bribery.
Ferguson was found guilty of bribery, racketeering, and extortion.
His father, Bernard Kilpatrick, was convicted on a single count of signing a false tax return according to Reuters. The three men have been out on bail during the trial.
The judge stated during the hearing that a verdict was met on Friday, but the prosecutors wanted the weekend to "go home and sleep on it" until Monday.
The decisions were met unanimous on 40 of the total 45 charges against the three men according to the Associated Press.
Despite the decision counts, things did get a little tense when trying to decide a proper punishment for their former mayor.
"There was always respect, (but) sometimes arguments got a little heated," one juror said according to Reuters.
In September 2008, Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice from his efforts to cover up an extramarital affair according to CNN.
Kilpatrick was once seen as a "rising star" in the Democratic Party when he was named Detroit mayor in 2002, some even predicted he could run for President one day. His legacy is now tarnished however, as he'll be remembered more for the events that landed him in jail this week.
Kilpatrick has yet to comment on the verdict of the case and refused to do so as he was escorted from the courthouse.
