iPhone 8 Latest Leaks: A New Name And A New Flat OLED Display?

iPhone 8 leaks continue to float on the web, updating Apple followers regarding the highly anticipated flagship. New leaks reveal the flagship's name and that it will no longer have a curved display.

Apple has allegedly assigned a new name for the highly anticipated iPhone 8. Mac Otakara, a reliable Japanese blog, claims that Apple has already assigned the name "Edition" for the successor of the iPhone 7. Apple has also distributed various prototypes of the new iPhone for employees' testing, the Sun reported.

Another new leak now points to a flat OLED display for the upcoming iPhone 8. In an interview with HIS Markit analyst Wayne Lam, the analyst said they are anticipating the Cupertino-based company to adopt a flat OLED design in the upcoming iPhone model.

This flat OLED design is synonymous with the 2.5D glass design on the current iPhone. Wayne Lam also mentioned that this new display has similarities with the recently announced LG G6.

Wayne Lam also mentioned that they expect a flat touchscreen with the latest and longer aspect ratio. Apparently, Apple is targeting to capitalize on the higher coverage area of the iPhone.

There were mixed responses on this new iPhone, now that it has come out in the open. The change of plan in using a curved OLED display may disappoint the iPhone fanatics.

However, according to Forbes, the new flat OLED display actually appears to be more beneficial to the new iPhone. The structural integrity will no longer be compromised with the flat implementation, as it is with the curved displays.

Although curved displays add to the aesthetic side, there are several disadvantages in sporting a curved display.

The first disadvantage can be experienced when playing videos. The edges of the interface appear warped when the display is curved.

Secondly, the curved display can result to several accidental touch inputs. This is especially true as the back button is placed in the top left corner of many apps. This concern is not easily addressed to by using an external case. So the revision of the curved display to a flat display would be a better choice indeed.

The upcoming so-called "iPhone Edition" has no official release date yet.
