Mount Etna Eruption Lights Up Night Sky, Italian Volcano Gives Locals A Show (PHOTOS/ VIDEO)

Italy's Mount Etna erupted on Tuesday, March 5, sending plumes of lava and ash souring into the night sky on the island of Sicily according to ABC News.

There are several uninhabited villages on the volcano, but no damages or injures have been reported.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology stated that they've recently registered increased explosive activity near the Etna according to the Associated Press.

Eruptions from the volcano aren't uncommon, but Italian airlines do occasionally have to alter routes to avoid flying over or through ash clouds according to the Telegraph.

Roads closed near the volcano as they were covered with volcanic stones, but flights to and from the area from a nearby airport were not affected.

A large Volcanic eruption took place in 2011, causing issues at European airports. Volcano fumes soured high into the atompshere, making it literally impossible for planes to fly by according to International Science Times.

The volcano is easily the biggest active volcano in Europe standing in at 9,842 feet. The volcano is located on the eastern portion of Sicily near Messina and Catania.
