Perhaps this could be considered a U.F.O. sighting. An unmanned aircraft reported to be a "drone" came dangerously close to a commercial airliner landing at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, prompting the FBI to appeal to the public for an information about the incident.
Crew members aboard Alitalia airlines flight 608 reported the drone, CNN reported.
"We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," the pilot can be heard telling air traffic controllers on radio calls, CNN reported.
The Boeing aircraft was on the final approach of a flight from Rome, and the incident occurred when the plane was 1,750 feet off the ground, the article stated.
No damage or injuries were reported, nor did the Alitalia flight have to take evasive action.
It's unclear where the drone came from or who was operating it. The report indicated that the Alitalia pilot warned other pilots in the area but that nobody else said they saw the drone.
Forbes reported the most likely explanation is that the pilot spotted a recreational remote-controlled aircraft and mistook it for an unmanned drone. Many toy aircraft are capable of being remotely flown in excess of 1,500 feet, the article stated, but there are FAA regulations stating that the maximum recreational remote-controlled planes can fly is 400 feet above ground.
The FAA said it's investigating the incident, according to CNN. The drone aircraft in question was black and no more than three feet wide with four propellers, the report said.
The FBI is seeking to identify the aircraft and its operators, CNN reported.
"The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us," said John Giacalone the agent in charge of the investigation, according to CNN. "Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and crew."
