The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS was caught dead testing in Sweden without its heavy camouflage but only with light foil. The real Porsche Panamera competitor is busy preparing for the real fight while all eyes are on its relative, the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, which is said to be another Panamera fighter.
The spy shots show not only its exterior but also some of its interior. In addition, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS might drop the "S" and be called instead "CLE" thanks to the new naming strategy of the automaker.
Exterior. Since the heavy wrap has been dropped off, the next-generation vehicle looks like the E-Class and the E-Class Coupe combined. Although it has maintained a raked roofline and narrow greenhouse, providing that streamlined appeal, its overall body looks bulkier compared with the AMG GT concept.
Also, MotorTrend pointed that it is possible that the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS could be positioned between the E-Class and S-Class since it has been lengthened a bit. Thus, an AMG GT 4 model could be a future vehicle for this white space, leaning toward the sportier market than the luxury.
Plus, the CLS sports a new grille shape that features the automaker's signature diamond pattern complemented with sleek headlights, which are angled inward.
Interior. Since 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS was based on the E-Class, its interior looks much like it too. It features a green ambient lighting, which according to AutoBlog, is only one of 64 color options.
Engine. There is no official numbers and drivetrain released by Mercedes as of this writing. But it is possible that since its platform was based on the E-Class, it could sport the same engine portfolio or a hotter version. Plus, a plug-in hybrid could also be offered.
Overall, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is not as aggressive-looking as its relative the AMG GT Concept, but it could still match the vehicle's curves. For now, stay tuned for more updates on its drivetrain, pricing, and availability.
