Ford Sales Increase By 9 Percent, GM Up 7 Percent For February, Both Companies Beat Estimated Sales Numbers

February was a big month for Ford, as the company saw sales increase 9 percent year-over-year with 195, 822 vehicles sold last month according to a company press release.

Ford SUVs saw a 21 percent increase largely due to new Escapes and Explorers.

Cars and trucks saw an increase in sales as well, at the company's Fusion sedan set an all-time February sales record and their popular F-Series models increased by 15 percent.

"As more new vehicle buyers continue returning to the marketplace, our fresh new product portfolio of fuel-efficient vehicles is winning over customers," says Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service according to USA Today.

Due to the positive sales month, Ford announced they're planning on building 800,000 vehicles in the second quarter, up 9 percent from 2012.

General Motors sold 224,314 vehicles in the U.S. last month, up 7 percent from Feb. 2012 according to a company press release.

This was GM's best February since the company sold 268,737 vehicles in 2008.

"The housing sector has now joined auto sales in propelling the U.S. economy forward," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations to USA Today. "More importantly, the recovery in new home construction is reinforcing the underlying improvement in auto buying conditions, especially for pickups."

Trucks sales were up 14 percent, meanwhile car sales were down 4 percent according to GM.

Four GM brands posted positive gains in February: Cadillac sales increased 20 percent, Buick increased 15 percent, GMC increased 10 percent and Chevrolet had the smallest gain at 5 percent.

Full-size pickups were up 28 percent in February with 58,039 vehicles sold according to GM.
