The buzz word in the auto industry today is self-driven or autonomous cars. The concept is fascinating and it has caught the interest of many automakers. Research on these cars is being carried out. From all the reports, the automakers seem confident that the cars will be available on the roads in a decade or so.

However, the concept of autonomous cars is worrisome for many people. Safety is the primary concern. But, it can be said that there is no need to worry. It will be a while before the cars hit the roads. It will take a long time before people totally stop driving with their bare hands. It will take a good number of years before the cars hit the road.

It is estimated that the first autonomous cars will be available for public use around 2020. These vehicles will not be privately used too. They will be used in ride-sharing fleets. The retail self-driving cars might be available in the markets only after 2025, reported Auto Blog.

Another aspect that we have to consider is that most cars will take close to 22 years to turn around. The cars that are being built in 2017 will be on the roads till about 2039. Until then at least, the roads will not be totally taken over by autonomous cars, reported United States Today.

It is estimated that even by 2030 all the cars on the road will not be fully autonomous. And the cars that ply as autonomous will need human intervention. By estimate, it could take until 2040before most cars are highly or fully automated.

Taking into consideration the fact that it will take another 20 years to turn the fleet over, the roads will see autonomous cars in plenty only by 2060.

Keeping all this apart, most people would not like to give up on the sheer pleasure of driving. So, the human psyche will get in the way of making all cars on the road autonomous.
