Logan Claws Its Way to the Top of the Box Office

“Logan” shredded the competition over the weekend, winning with a massive $85.3 million debut. It was one of the biggest premieres for any “R”-rated movie, and the biggest opening weekend of any of this year’s films so far.

According to Roger Bert, Logan has characters with which a person can identify and care about. It is not just great for a superhero movie, it is a great movie for any genre. The movie is set in 2029 where mutants have been removed from the human bloodline, which means that Logan and the nonagenarian Professor X are the end of an era.

At the start of the movie, Logan is laying low and he works as a driver. He was sleeping in his car when a group of tough guys try to steal his tires. In an attempt to stop them, Logan gets shot, but as expected the bullets don’t do much to Wolverine. That’s when his Adamantium claws start slicing through skull and bone in ways that Marvel has never portrayed before. Logan is the first “R”-Rated iteration of this classic character, and Mangold’s approach to action is unique for the Marvel film brand. The whole action during the movie is organic to the story and the characters. Every fighting scene is done with more choreography than editing. The fighting is smooth and character driven.

The plot starts when Logan, Professor X, and a mysterious girl head out to try and find ‘Eden’. It is a place where mutants have escaped and are going to start over. At this point, Logan realizes he has one last journey. He has to protect the girl from the team of mercenaries chasing them. The mercenaries are led by a guy named Donald Price. On top of that, Professor X is so old, that he has seizures. He needs a sedative shot top stop a seizure and pills to keep them from coming on in the first place. Because once he gets them, his brain capable of mass destruction goes ham.

Both, Professor X and Logan know that they don’t have much time left on the planet. This is one of the best performances of Hugh Jackman’s career. He portrays Logan as a man who has lost all of his friends and most of his purpose, hesitant to fight again.

Logan is a great action movie. Every action scene has a purpose. When Logan goes into action, it feels organic to the plot, moving the themes and characters forward.

According to Wired, ‘Logan’ is about finding redemption in an imperfectly lived life. This was Hugh Jackman’s last movie as a Wolverine. He did mention a possible collaboration with Wade Wilson in a future Deadpool movie, but as far as Wolverine goes, this the last one.
