Volkswagen revealed this week their latest version of the Golf GTI on their company website ahead of its scheduled debut at the Geneva International Motor Show. For the first time ever, the hatchback will be available with two power levels: a 220 horsepower and 230 horsepower option.
The new vehicles is powered by a turbo charged direct-injection gasoline engine that allows 220 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque in standard form according to a company press release.
Volkswagen will also be offering a factory-installed package for the first time which increases the power to 230 hp and adds larger brakes and torque-sensing limited-slip differential.
Both options will be equipped with a Stop-Start system according to Volkswagen.
The 2015 model features red-painted brake calipers, lowered sport suspension, and 17-inch "Brooklyn" GTI wheels. Smoked LED taillights and side skirts are also standard for the new model.
"We are still evaluating whether we can bring the performance pack to the U.S.," said Mark Gillies, a Volkswagen of America spokesman to Edmunds this week. "We have no finalized U.S. (specifications), no fuel economy numbers."
The new GTI will return 21 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway with the 2.0-liter four cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission option according to the EPA. The GTI with the same engine and a six-speed automatic transmission gets 24 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway.
Pricing has yet to be finalized for the new GTI vehicles, but the company was able to release a base price estimate. The new Volkswagen will start for approximately $24,995 with the $795 destination charge.
The updated GTI offers an 18 percent improvement in fuel economy versus the current GTI.
Expect to see the new VW at dealerships starting this May in the Europe and sometime this spring in the U.S.
