BMW X3 is getting a complete overhaul. Official spy shots are now circulating the web giving a sneak peek for the new rival of Audi Q5. The new crossover features a revolutionary design yet still keeping its iconic profile.

BMW Austria has released some spy shots of the upcoming BMW X3 while undergoing testing. The heavy camouflaged car reveals the iconic kidney grille being flanked by sharper LED headlamps.

New design features point to the rear parts. The bumpers have been reshaped. The rear comes more muscular too.

The new X3 is expected to utilize the latest lightweight rear-wheel drive platform. This suggests that the new car will be a little longer yet 100-kilo lighter than the previous.

This new platform sports the latest 5 Series saloon and the 3 Series which are set to come out in 2018. This also meant there's an improvement in fuel economy, handling and performance.

Furthermore, the new platform also means significant revisions were done under the skin. About 50 kg to 100 kg were removed out of the new car.

Since the new X3 is expected to compete with the Audi Q5, it is anticipated to sport a 425bhp 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight six similar coming from the M3. However, the 262bhp six-cylinder diesel from the new 7 series is expected to gain much orders, Auto Express reported.

In another report, spy photos for the new X3 reveal the new crossover has similar taillights with the current models. In addition, the new car seems to have a kink on the third row.

With regard to technology advancements, the new X3 comes with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). Auto Industriya has noted that there might also be a hybrid variant and an M variant for the new X3.

The upcoming BMW X3 is expected to come out in the middle of the year.
