Google Pixel 2 has been officially announced by the VP of Google Hardware, Rick Osterloh. He also made a statement pertaining to the rumors about a low-cost Pixel phone and killed the rumor on site.

Rick Osterloh, Google Hardware VP, was interview briefly by AndroidPit during the 2017 Mobile World Congress. When asked whether or not there will be a Google Pixel 2, he had this to say: "There is an annual rhythm in the industry. So, you can count on a successor this year, even if you don't hear a date from me now."

This could suggest that the "Pixel" brand is here to stay and Google might have slowly distance itself from the Nexus brand that, of course, we know and love. But the Pixel phones were the epitome of what a real Android smartphone should be as Google designed it from scratch, added high-quality camera, and ensured it is of premium quality.

If you remember Google's two-year update guarantee program, the Nexus brand is nearing that specific timeline. So, it is no surprise that the tech giant is focusing its resources on its flagship Pixel brand. Also, Osterloh pointed out that that both the current Google Pixel and Pixel XL are too few devices to meet consumer demand.

Now, in response to a low-cost Pixel unit, rumored as "Pixel 2B," the Google exec simply said: "Pixel stays premium." Now, what he means by the Pixel staying premium is the price tag, obviously.

Clearly, Google plans to continue in the "upper price segment" and competing directly with the likes of iPhone with its upcoming Google Pixel 2 device. Also, at least the tech giant isn't splitting its focus by tying to delve into the lower- and mid-market segments, unlike other manufacturers. Just leave it to them, anyway.

We can expect Google Pixel 2 to come out in 2017, although there is no specific date. But as Osterloh pointed out, if the tech giant does follow the annual trend, then October is the most likely date for its release, just like the current Pixel phone when it launched in October 2016.

Engadget also agrees with the October schedule. According to them, Google hold launch events for the Nexus brands in the past.

Now, what do we know so far about the Google Pixel 2 devices? The tech giant has kept a tight lid and our best bet so far are rumors which included water resistance, a faster processor, and a better camera.
