The recently released "Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale" have made its way to the box-office list topping more than one billion yen in Japan. This was confirmed by the official Twitter account of the film.

The anime film is based on the sci-fi action light novel series of the same title created by Reki Kawahara. The film debuted in its home country on Feb. 18, and since then it has enjoyed a massive domestic box office success. The film is slated to be released in the United States on March 9. The anime film's limited US release will be handled by Fathom Events.

"Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale" earned an impressive 426 million yen from more than 308,000 ticket sales within its first two days of screening in Japan, according to Crunchy Roll. It became the weekend's top grosser during its first week, and was edged into the number two spot during its second week by the award-winning musical "La La Land."

The popularity of "Sword Art Online" have prompted a series of leaks following its release in various South Asian markets. Several footages of the film, which appears to have been recorded from theater screens, have appears on various streaming websites.

The "Sword Art Online" leak has prompted its distributor to release a statement, "We received a notice from Japan that there are SAO movie video leaks ranging from 10 secs to 8 mins, and the source was traced to Singapore and Malaysia's Fan Screening on 18 Feb 2017."

"Sword Art Online" has been a massive hit since it was first released as a light novel back in April 2009. Its massive popularity has spawned four video games based on the series. It has been adapted into manga, anime, and live-action series as well.
