"Dragon Ball Super" Episode 80 left viewers stunned and the community in sheer discussion. First off, the fight between Gohan and Lavenda turned out to be a tie. Secondly, the startling fact behind the Tournament of Powers was revealed: mortal level ranking. 

So, what is exactly is mortal level ranking? And what are the factors that are taken into consideration when determining the average level for each universe?

The Great Priest revealed that the shocking reason behind the tournament is that there were too many universes and that the mortal ranks were too imbalanced. He also said that the Tournament of Power was designed to determine which powerful universe will continue to exist. Thus, the tournament was the best way to remove weak ones.

What the participating universes realized is that they were destined for destruction. And by winning, they get the chance to save themselves.

Only Universe 1, 5, 8, and 12 were exempt from being obliterated, reports ComicBook. This means that their average mortal level ranking is high enough to save each one.

Now, in "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 80, we learned that the overall mortal level for Universe 7 is 3.18, making them the second from the bottom in terms of ranking. Universe 9 was significantly lower than this with 1.86. This confirmed the reason why U9 was selected to face U7 in the exhibition match.

Since "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 80, the topic of the mortal level ranking in the multiverse has gotten a lot of feedback from the Dragon Ball community. There's a handful of various theories and speculations as to how exactly the scaling of mortal level is handled in "Dragon Ball Super."

Although one thing is quite established, the mortal level ranking cannot be based solely on strength as U7 fighters are relatively strong.  But the mortal level ranking could be based on the quality of life in the universe and about how advanced and peaceful civilizations are within each universe.

Given that Freeza, Buu, and others wrecked havoc on Earth and Universe 7 and it took a couple of times for Dragon Balls to restore them, this theory could support as to why Universe 7's rank is low. But these are pure speculations as of the moment.

For now, what is exciting is Goku's match with Bergamo in "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 81. This will signal the final exhibition match. And the arc will push forward, pitting each universe against each other.

According to a report, "Dragon Ball Super" will not air on the week of March 12 as TOEI animation is gearing up for an explosive Universal Tournament arc. DBS is slated to return on March 19.
