Valve has announced a partnership with LG to produce a VR headset for the SteamVR Tracking system. The VR headset is expected to directly compete with the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive.

Valve and LG to create a VR headset for the StreamVR tracking system. The American game developer and Korean tech giant is busy gearing up for Game Developers Conference where the pair will introduce a prototype of the VR headset. The VR headset will utilize StreamVR tracking and built on the OpenVR platform.

A press release about the headset from Valve reads, "The LG HMD prototype is designed to deliver a high fidelity, next generation VR experience." Pricing and details on the headset's specs are currently unavailable but will be announced at a later time.

It should be noted that the HTC Vive utilizes software and tracking technology of SteamVR. This is because the game developer's tracking technology is for other VR companies to use so it should come as no surprise that the American game developer is working with the Korean tech firm.

This is not the first time that the Korean company entered the virtual reality market. It launched its own VR headset called 360 VR last year. However, it was met with negative reviews. The 360 VR headset was criticized for both its looks and the virtual reality experience it offered. The headset was actually an accessory of its 2016 flagship phone G5 along with the 360 Cam and the Rolling Bot.

Given that the game developer's goal is to get third-party developers to use its SteamVR Tracking technology, it should be expected that more VR devices will come out. In fact, it has offered its tracking technology to developers without royalty charges.

In other VR-related news, HTC is busy working on a new VR device as a successor to the Vive while Samsung announced an all-new Gear VR with Controller at the MWC 2017. Both devices are said to head-to-head with Google's Daydream View.
