The icon is back. Nokia 3310 is being relaunched following its announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This nostalgic unit has been quite upgraded and packs a month-long battery, a camera, and of course 2G connection. It is even colored!
Finally, the company has confirmed recent rumors when they showcased the iconic Nokia 3310 that comes with a colored screen, a camera, and a longer battery life. Alongside the iconic unit of our childhood are two new Android phones: Nokia 5 and Nokia 3. Plus, the company will soon globally release the Nokia 6 smartphone, as was announced during the Congress in Barcelona.
Initially released in 2000, the next-gen Nokia 3310 takes on the iconic silhouette of its predecessor. It basically re-imagines it for 2017. For better readability in sunlight, it comes with a 2.4-inch polarized and curved screen window.
Exterior. The design of its pushed buttons takes that of the original. It has a 2 MP camera with LED flash for basic snaps and of course a headphone jack, to listen to music via an FM radio or an MP3 player. It comes in either single or dual SIM variant and a 16 MB storage capacity with a microSD slot expandable up to 32 GB.
Interior. Despite retaining the name of its predecessor, the new Nokia 3310 will run on Nokia's Series 30+ software, allowing the user to browse the web using Opera Mini but with a smaller App range compared with an Android or iOS. It has 2G connectivity for calling and texting, but has of course, slower data speeds when compared with 3G or 4G, reports The Verge.
Battery. The best thing about this iconic phone? Its battery. It has a standby time of 31 days, with a talk time of 22 hours. Seriously, who talks for 22 hours? We can now go back to days when we can leave the house without having the need for a powerbank or a charger.
Nokia 3310 in Australia. Since its initial outing in 2000, Nokia has sold 126 million copies of the original unit. It was an era when Nokia ruled every other popular handsets.
However, the comeback of the iconic phone might have a problem down under. Since it relies on 2G network, well 2G is not really around anymore in Australia. You can see the problem there. Telstra has already switched off its 2G network back in December 2016, according to CNET. And others like Vodafone and Optus will soon follow suit, in September and April, respectively.
Overall, the new Nokia 3310 is basically as "feature phone" thanks to its fairly basic features compared with today's smartphone standard. But it does look stunning as it is smaller, thinner, and of course lighter.
The exciting feature it does have is an upgraded version of the grand daddy of mobile games: Snake. Think you can beat your high score in this colored version?
Plus, consumers have 4 amazing shades to choose from. You have warm red and yellow, both with a glossy finish. And then there's the dark blue and grey, both with a matte finish. So, which one would you have?
The new Nokia 3310 is slated to be available by the second quarter of the year. According to HMD, it will be priced at around $52. So, are you ready for the return of an iconic classic?
