The Intel Xeon family has just gotten bigger with the recent announcement of the Intel Xeon D-1500 Network Series. This new processor series is aimed for data centers but Intel said that they may have other applications aside from that one.

Intel claims that the new Xeon D-1500 is capable of up to 40Gbps of compression/encryption throughput, according to The Register. The chipmaker added that it can also handle up to 90Mpps of Layer 3 forwarding. This specific feature essentially makes the chip an ideal match for Whitebox routers which are used for wireless base stations.

Many tech analysts have noticed Intel's growing shift towards networking technology. Some analysts have pointed out that the reason behind this shift is the expanding industry of Internet of Things (IoT), and the looming release of 5G network.

Some believed that the chip manufacturing industry has already reached the limit of Moore's Law and there is little, or almost non-existent, for more improvements. This is probably the reason why Intel is shifting its focus towards improving networking functions on its products.

Along with the new Intel Xeon processors, Intel also unveiled the new Atom C300 series. This is a low-power system-on-chip (SoC) is specifically designed for IoT devices. On top of the new Atom series is a chip that packs 16 cores and was designed for extreme compartmentalization. It also sports built-in virtualization technologies.

The Intel Atom C300 series only has an 8.5TDP, a great feature that allows the chip to be passively cooled and can be embedded on IoT devices without the concern of possible overheating. The new Atom chips are also equipped with Intel's QuickAssist Technology which allows them to process up to 20Gbps of compression/ encryption throughput, according to Neowin.

Intel has yet to confirm the price of the new Xeon and Atom chips. However, there is a big possibility that these chips will make their official debut at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month.
