Valentine's Day is about to get a lot more meaningful for some people living in Illinois. The state Senate is scheduled to vote today on whether to legalize same-sex marriage.

The measure is expected to be approved because Illinois Democrats have a supermajority control of the General Assembly, CNN reported. 

Chicago news station WGN said Gov. Pat Quinn voiced "strong support" and indicated he will sign the bill if it is passed.

Earlier this month Quinn said that "marriage equality is a matter of fairness and equal rights under law," CNN reported.

"We took the first step towards marriage equality two years ago when I signed civil unions into law. Since that day, thousands of committed couples in 92 counties across our state have entered into civil unions," Quinn said, according to CNN. "Now is the time for the next step in providing equal rights to all people in Illinois."

The Illinois Senate president John J. Cullerton said he wanted to get the same-sex marriage bill up for a vote on Valentine's Day, WGN reported.

Illinois would be the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriage. The practice is also allowed the District of Colombia.

Citing nationwide polls, CNN reported that the support for legalizing same-sex marriage is gaining momentum across the county, although it remains less popular in the Midwestern and Southern regions of the U.S.

Illinois would also be the second state to legalize same-sex marriage in the Midwest, a religion which traditionally votes conservatively.

Civil unions were made legal in Illinois two years ago. Four other states also recognize legal civil unions.

Twenty-nine states have constitutional provisions banning same-sex marriage, according to CNN.
