125 mph, no Brakes: Runaway Renault Gives French Man Ride of His Life

A man in France got the ride of his life Wednesday after a trip to the his local supermarket turned into a high-speed run that spanned nearly 125 miles and two countries after a malfunction in his car left it stuck speeding at 125 mph, The Guardian reported.

Frank Lecerf is lucky to be alive after his Renault Laguna began speeding out of control. The car was reportedly equipped with speed dials to help disabled drivers who cannot operate traditional breaking and acceleration pedals.

Lecerf claims that his car's speed dial jammed at 60 mph and when he tried breaking the car sped up instead of slowing down, with each tap of the break causing the car to go faster. The car reached speed of 125 mph and remained stuck at the breakneck speed for an hour, The Atlantic reported.

Lecerf managed to phone the police from the runaway Renault from the fast lane and a squad of police cars was sent barreling down the French A16 expressway in an attempt to catch up with, then escort Leceft, The Guardian reported.

"My life flashed before me," Lecerf later told Le Courrier Picard, The Atlantic reported. "I just wanted it to stop."

A Renault technician was patched through on the phone to Lecerf to try to help him regain control of the car, to no avail, the reports state.

The Guardian reported Lecerf had experienced problems with the car's speed dials before, but said Renault looked at the car and reported it was fine.

Lecerf plans to file a legal complaint against Renault, reports stated.

The speedy situation ended after the Renault ran out of gas and rolled into a ditch after crossing into Belgian border, 125 miles away from where the trip begain in Abbeville, France.
