A year ago, the well-known German automaker, Mercedes-Benz, revealed a heavily camouflaged copy of its electric Urban eTruck. And less than a year later, it's time for the truck to hit the road.

Stefan Buchner, head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks worldwide, said, "Initially, a low two-figure number of Mercedes' new revolutionary zero-emission trucks will go to customers in Germany, with more to follow elsewhere in Europe later this year. We are currently talking to around 20 potential customers from the waste, foodstuffs and logistics sectors."

The Urban eTruck comes with a massive 212 kWh battery pack and has an electric driving range of 125 miles or 200 km. Along with a special charger, the truck will be handed over to the customers to use for 12 months that will also be supported by the road testing department of Mercedes-Benz Trucks.

The vehicles are fitted with a special charger which takes into account the increase demands on a truck, though without revealing the power capacity of the truck. So far, details are that 18 and 25-ton models will soon be offered, and will be equipped with dry box, refrigerated and platform bodies.

The vehicle looks very futuristic. Its headlights are about as thin as LEDs allow, and cladding covering the whole side of the vehicle will keep its efficiency as high as possible. The interior also looks awesome since it's equipped with a vertically mounted steering and a few screens attached on the dashboard.

However, the truck isn't on sale yet. The automaker will first deliver a low two-figure number of trucks to German customers, and possibly expanding across Europe.

As what Buchner said, Mercedes is starting off with small series production for the Urban eTruck and final version is expected for 2020. Since by that year, the battery prices should decrease and the capacity should continue to rise.
