2017 Toyota Prius Prime And 2017 Hyundai Ioniq: A Neck-To-Neck War

The 2017 Prius Prime and 2017 Hyundai Ioniq are both plug-in hyrid cars with the latest technology advancements. Below are some detailed technical comparisons of the two models.

With regard to infotainment system, the Prius Prime has a bigger display at 11.6 inches while the Hyundai Ioniq only has an 8-inch screen. However, the latter's display has integration for Android or Apple smartphones while the former does not.

In terms of connectivity, both models have similar functions like phone charging, interior temperature control or even a system to locate your vehicle in cases you have forgotten its parking spot. Both vehicles also have wireless charging system for phones.

However, the Ioniq offers more. Its Blue Link apps can be integrated with Apple Watch, Android Wear watches and Amazon Alexa. In addition, it also has stolen vehicle recovery system and roadside assistance.

In consideration of safety features, both models sport a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alerts and blind-spot monitoring.

Furthermore, the Prius Prime boasts of its Toyota Safety Sense. This is now the standard of safety being utilized on the majority of Toyota's new cars. This Toyota Safety Sense provides assistance in pedestrian detection, radar cruise control and lane departure alert alongside steering assist. Whereas, the Ioniq has similar safety features as well.

Looking on the interiors, the Ioniq seems to have an ergonomic layout than the Prius Prime. Hyundai seems to have considered the ergonomic layout of positioning the controls where the driver will not have a hard time locating it.

The Ioniq has its TFT LCD cluster placed just in front of the driver for easy sight. Hyundai has also placed the controls on the steering wheel to make navigations with ease and speed.

However, the Prius has its instrument cluster positioned to the right of the driver. The cluster can be spotted at the center of the dashboard which will require the driver to make an extra effort to look sideways. Things were improved with the Prius Prime, because the model has a heads-up display which will no longer require the extra effort to look sideways while driving, TechCrunch has reviewed.

Aesthetics wise, both models are hatchbacks. However, Toyota made a four-seater Prime while Hyundai made a five-seater Ioniq.

As powertrains, both models are plug-in hybrid cars integrated with full hybrid system augmented by ultra-efficient Atkinson cycle four-cylinders. However, they differ in capacities as Hyundai Ioniq is a 1.6 liter while the Toyota Prius Prime is a 1.8 liter, Hybridcars has noted.
