General Motors announced today that the Cadillac ELR will be undergoing the real-world extream testing required to help the company make the model available to Cadillac showrooms sometime in early 2014.
The vehicle was showcased for the first time at the North American International Auto Show and won the Eyes on Design Award for best production vehicle at the event.
"I won't throw stones, but the mentality of management at the time was focused on fuel-free technology on a global basis, considering the cost of fuel," said ELR chief engineer Chris Tomason to WardsAuto at the Chicago Auto Show. "We had one global brand at the time, Chevrolet. Now we have two with Cadillac."
GM announced in a press release that engineers have now also completed winter weather chassis testing on pre-production ELR models.
The testing, which occurred in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, evaluated the car's handing in winter weather conditions according to GM.
"Being able to test the ELR in extreme road conditions, like those we experienced here in the U.P., allows us to provide a ride-and-handling character unlike any EV on the market today," said Chris Thomason, ELR chief engineer in the company press release. "During this latest test, the ELR continued to perform beyond our expectations."
The ELR was designed to "provide" owners with a "sporty, yet confident" handling character" according to the press release. It's exterior establishes a new, progressive side that the brand is hoping to accomplish by 2014.
The design for the ELR was based on the Cadillac Converj Concept according to the company press release. The ELR will be made available to all 50 states, not just selected markets.
