The Sportage, now in its fourth generation, is the automaker's longest-running nameplate. Kia's redesigned 2017 Sportage may be the not the most eye-catching of new products, but it's expected to do very well on the ongoing CUV wars.
Kia's 2017 model measure the same with its predecessor measuring 73 inches wide but gains 1.2 inches on the wheelbase and 1.6 inches in overall length. The car offers more room for passengers and 18 percent greater cargo space in the back. The luggage floor also can be moved into a lower position to make more vertical space when needed.
The Sportage was designed by a famous designer Peter Schreyer. Its tiger-nose grille, a hallmark of Schreyer, was moved up to help the ice cube fog lamps, while the car's headlights sweep back along the sides of the car. It's A and C pillars are thinner, allowing the passengers to have a better visibility from inside the car.
The 2017 Kia Sportage now looks sportier, thanks to a lighter, stiffer body, a redesigned suspension, and a new engine tuning. Its entry-level 2.4-liter inline four produces 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It also offers a front or all-wheel drive.
It comes with three driving modes such as Eco, Normal and Sport. In Eco, the throttle is numb, steering is incredibly vague, and the six-speed automatic transmission shifts as early as possible to increase fuel economy. In Normal, drives will get more responsive acceleration and a touch more weight in the steering. Drivers won't feel any lack of power. Lastly, in Sport, the throttle and the transmission holds the gears higher up in the rev range. The car's steering becomes much direct and adds more weight.
On the inside, the car gets a more luxurious and a handful of technology. The dashboard comes with a strong, upmarket look and includes a full central control layout. It also includes a USB port, a small touch screen, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Higher trims also can be outfitted with a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen that highlights sharp graphics. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available.
The 2017 Kia Sportage has a price tag of $23,795 for the base model LX with FWD. Choosing AWD will cost an additional $1,500 on any trim level.
