The northeastern United States is bracing for a possibly historic blizzard that could result in up to three feet of snow the next two days according to Weather.com.
Blizzard warnings are currently in effect from New Jersey through Maine, though Boston, Massachusetts is expected to suffer the most. The day began with light snow and wind, although most predictions expect heavier snowfall to begin by the afternoon.
State officials for places like New York and New Jersey have urged residents to stay home rather than risk getting stuck during potential whiteout conditions according to Reuters. If you have to commute, try to get off the roads no later than 3:00 p.m.
Hundreds of gas stations have reported they're out of gasoline as motorists rushed to buy gas before the storm hit. At least three stations ran out of gas in the Queens, N.Y according to Reuters.
"You always get long lines ahead of a storm, but as the wounds from Hurricane Sandy are still so fresh, it's not surprising that people are rushing to fill up," said Michael Watt, executive director of the Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association to Reuters. "It's understandable. Even people like me who would normally think it was foolish to panic buy will be thinking about it."
New York is still recovering from the effects of October's Hurricane Sandy, and officials claim that over 1,800 Sanitation Department trucks with snow plows and salt are ready to be deployed to help clean up the snow.
Officials have told people to prepare for power outages, major coastal flooding, high winds, and possible blizzard conditions.
More than 18.2 inches of snow is expected in Boston, which would rank among the largest snowfalls ever in Boston. Approximately 27.6 inches came in 2003, the largest snowfall ever in Boston.
Airlines have been canceling over 3,000 flights already according to FlightAware.com. Over 880 flights have been canceled for this weekend as well.
"This is a dangerous storm, and we ask motorists to be careful while driving," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, director of the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management to Reuters. "(The) evening commute will be treacherous throughout much of New Jersey."
