Star Trek Villain Revealed: Rumors Circulate That ‘Sherlock’ Star Benedict Cumberbatch Will Play Khan, Was The Surprise Spoiled? (PHOTOS/ VIDEO)

While it is well known that "Star Trek Into Darkness" will include a new villain, director J.J. Abrams is keeping a tight lid on who Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing in the movie.

Entertainment Weekly may have given away that surprise this week however, as they put Cumberbatch and Chris Pine on the cover with the title "Kirk and Khan."

A huge announcement such as this most certainly wouldn't have been done through an entertainment magazine, so viewers should be cautious whether or not it actually reveals anything. Since Entertainment Weekly fails to mention Khan anywhere else, the headline could have been made up just to sell magazines to thousands of patiently waiting hopefuls.

"The premise here is that whoever does data entry on the EW website had the inside knowledge that Cumberbatch is Khan," said Devin Faraci of Badass Digest. "I mean, it's possible. I've seen stuff leak out through mishandled publicity materials."

To further the Khan rumors, a Japanese version of a teaser trailer for the new movie included a shot which is reminiscent of a scene in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

The magazine, which is on sale now, does reiterate a few times that Abrams has still not revealed the villain Cumberbatch will be playing. It does seems clear however that they either know something Star Trek fans don't or they're just as clueless by printing a guess on their cover.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is in theaters in 2D, 3D, and Imax 3D on May 17, 2013 according to IMDB.

So what do you think? Will Cumberbatch be playing Khan or another villain in the new movie?
