Helton has already released a statement issued by the Rockies that he is embarrassed, while also apologizing to his teammates, family and the community.

"Last evening I exercised poor judgment and was charged with drinking and driving after driving to a gas station near my house," said Helton in a press statement. "I am very sorry and embarrassed by my actions. I hold myself to a high standard and take my responsibility as a public figure very seriously. "

Police officials stated that Helton was arrested after someone called the police to report a drunken driver.

After Helton's black Ford pickup was located at a Conoco gas station and pulled over, Helton's blood-alcohol content was well over the legal limit. He was taken into custody for DUI and careless driving according to CBS.

Helton's blood-alchohol content number has yet to be released.

The long-time Rockies first-baseman is a .320 hitter, and has won four Silver Sluggers and three Gold Glove awards in his career. He is expected to return for his 17th year this season despite only playing 69 games during the 2012 season according to BaseballReference.com.

"My entire career I have worked to set a positive example for my family and in our community and I fell far short of this standard," said Helton in the press statement." I sincerely ask my family, the Colorado Rockies Organization, Major League Baseball and the community to accept my apology."
