After GM sold more than 700,000 first-generation Terrains since 2009, the company has finally revealed a new model of their popular compact crossover for the 2018 model year. The 2018 GMC Terrain will take on the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, and Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle already made its debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
The car looks completely brand new since it now built on GM's D2XX platform. It also shares the platform and other components with the Chevrolet Equinox. Similar with the 2018 Equinox, the new model will offer three engines that will include two turbocharged gas four-cylinders and a turbodiesel four.
The base 1.5-liter gas four produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, while the other 2.0-liter inline four makes 252 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. In addition, the automaker's 1.6-liter diesel four will also be offered, making 137 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. The two gas engines will be matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission and the diesel will get a six-speed auto.
So far, no fuel-economy claims have been created, but expect the new models to surpass the outgoing models, with the diesel claiming around 40 mpg on the EPA highway cycle. The automaker will also offer front and all-wheel drive models.
On the inside, the 2018 GMC Terrain has upped refinement levels along with real aluminum trim, more soft-touch surfaces, and a center control storage space with new Electronic Precision Shift controller that substitutes the standard transmission shifter with buttons and triggers. It also comes with a new fold-flat front passenger seat and new under-floor compartments.
Depending on the trim level, the new model also features a 7- or 8-inch infotainment system equipped with a standard OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Owners can control the new model via GMC's myGMC smartphone app from them to remotely start, lock and unlock doors and load destinations into navigation.
Other safety features will include a 360-degree camera, lane keeps assist, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and a Rear Seat Reminder that reminds drivers to check the backseat when leaving the vehicle. The all new 2018 GMC Terrain will arrive on dealership this summer. GMC haven't provided any details yet on the price but expect it to be close to the base price of the current Terrain, which starts at $24,070.
