At least 22 people were killed when a gravel filled truck collided with a bus full of at least 46 Asian migrant workers according to Reuters.
The truck driver lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to land on top of the bus, trapping the passengers inside under the cargo of gravel on Feb. 3 according to General Hussein al-Harithi, the director of Abu Dhabi traffic police.
At least 24 other people were injured, five of which are in critical condition according to officials from two separate hospitals in al-Ain. Some of the wounded were taken to hospitals from the road via helicopter.
Police have yet to state the nationalities of the dead, but the Dubai-based Gulf News daily has reported they were mostly from Bangladesh or Pakistan according to Reuters.
The death totals on United Arab Emirates roads are among the highest in the world according to a report by World Health Organization.
The UAE is a federation consisting of seven emirates that include trade and tourism hub Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which is known for their oil.
At least 22 of the individuals killed in the collision were cleaning workers according to a report by Xinhua.
Police have already confirmed that the truck "deviated from its route" due an issue with the brakes. A police report states that the brakes were not in working order on the truck, something the driver didn't notice before leaving according to The Examiner.
