Intel has just launched their latest and greatest Xeon CPU processor, the Xeon E7-8894 V4 processor, which is the highest-performing 24-core processor ever made by Intel. The new processor currently sells at $8,898.

This latest processor is based on the Broadwell-Ex die and comes with a 200 MHz higher base frequency than it predecessor, the E7-8890, which was released in the second quarter of 2016. It has 24 cores with Hyper-Threading technology, 165 W TDP, 60 MB of L3 cache, a default frequency of 2.4 GHz and a Turbo frequency of up to 3.4 GHz.

Similar with other Broadwell-EX XCC CPU's, the new chip is equipped with a quad-channel DDR3/DDR4 memory controller support and can take up to 3 TB of DRAM per socket. The CPU's also comes with 32 Pcle 3.0 lanes and three 9.6 GT/s QPI links for multi-socket environments.

The new Xeon E7-8894 v4 processor is priced high for a lot of reasons. It aimed at fault tolerant servers that are used by financial or retail companies which require highly dependable systems for fraud detection and transactions. If a server crashes, these companies could lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

This new chip has unique features that are not found in any regular PC or server chips, such as correction and RAS, which is capable of diagnosing and troubleshooting issues without crashing the servers. It also has high levels of I/O and networking integration.

Right now, these chips aren't that high in volume shipments. But instead, they are made in smaller groups. This new chips will be the fuel revenue for Intel, which is now focusing more on data center types of equipment than PCs.

In addition, the Intel Xeon E7-8894 v4 processor is perfectly designed for heavy-duty servers with eight or more sockets. Since mission critical servers are always required to run 24x7x365, demand for this kind of processors is very high. This chip also has the same capabilities as its direct predecessor, the E7-8890 v4 Xeon chip.
