Legendary Italian automaker Lamborghini recently announced that it is recalling 5,900 luxury cars after reports of some of them catching fire. This is a rare case for Lamborghini which is known for exceptionally built cars, but what is even more astonishing is the fact that the recall includes one of the rarest cars in the world: the Lamborghini Veneno supercar which costs $4 million.
"In certain driving conditions while the vehicle has a full gas tank, gasoline may contact the exhaust system... [this] can increase the risk of a fire," Lamborghini wrote in a recall notice submitted to the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Lamborghini said that the risk of cars catching fire is increased if the vehicles are fitted with unapproved aftermarket exhaust system. Although Lamborghini luxury cars are excellent even when factory tuned, there are some owners that add aftermarket performance upgrades for their cars.
Lamborghini later added that the company has received seven reports about cars catching fire. The Italian automaker said that it is not aware of any driver or passenger that have been injured because of the problem.
The recall includes all 12 Lamborghini Veneno supercars three Veneno hardtops and nine Veneno Roadsters. The supercar, which packs a 12-cylinder engine, is a racing prototype that is road legal and can be driven on the streets. Lamborghini said that all Veneno supercar owners in the U.S. were properly notified about the recall.
Also part of the recall are about 5,900 Lamborghini Aventadors, each has a base price of around $400,000. According to CNBC, the recall will cover Aventador Coupes, Aventador Js, and Aventador Roadsters with model years 2012 up to 2017.
According to CNN, owners will be notified by mail to inform them about the recall. Moreover, they will be instructed to take their cars to a Lamborghini dealership which will inspect the car and make the necessary fix. The automaker said that the fix will take about a day or two to be completed.
