CONFIRMED: Newest Mitsubishi SUV Is Known As The Eclipse Cross

Next month's Geneva Auto Show will see the unveiling of Mitsubishi's newest SUV. The vehicle has been confirmed to be the Eclipse Cross and is expected to directly compete with the Nissan Qashqai as it known in Europe and Rogue Sport in the US.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV. The Eclipse is a name instantly recognizable to US buyers and was exclusively associated with the popular two-door sports car that came in coupe and convertible models. It was unfortunately discontinued back in 2012. The car manufacturer will revive the name but will be using it for its newest SUV instead.

The name references the original Eclipse with the new SUV's coupe-like shape and sporty design. The Eclipse Cross features steep rear windows, a sloping roofline at the rear, and a sporty and chiseled front. The Eclipse Cross will supposedly sport a roof spoiler as well as a one-piece taillight.

The Japanese car manufacturer has confirmed that the name of its new compact SUV is what it will be known as in Europe and the United States. It will sit between the mid-size Outlander SUV and the smaller Outlander Sport. Although it is a compact SUV, it will have a more coupe-like profile.

The Eclipse name was used for a sports car produced by Mitsubishi from 1990 to 2012. The Japanese car manufacturer was able to churn out four generations of the car. Fans of the sports car would know that the second generation Eclipse was featured and immortalized in the 2001 movie "The Fast and the Furious" and driven by Brian O'Connor played by the late Paul Walker.

No other details on the Eclipse Cross SUV are available to date. It seems that the company is keeping mum on information about the vehicle preferring to wait until the Geneva Auto Show next month. The yearly auto trade show will be held from March 9 to 19 at the Geneva Palexpo convention center located next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport.
