Flying Car Tested, Transition Expected To Sell For $279,000 By Terrafugia, Has Porsche Qualities (VIDEO)

Terrafugia Inc., known for making the Transition flying car, stated this week that the testing process required by the Federal Aviation Administration is going as planned, but not as quickly as they hoped.

The company reported to The Wall-Street Journal that a number of small problems have occurred that has slowed down the testing program. They're not necessary surprised by the number of "small snags" as minor issues are common for new aircraft designs.

The Transition is expected to sell for approximately $279,000.

The vehicle has folded wings, control surfaces, and a small propeller that allows it to fly like any other light aircraft that currently exists according to the report. Once the wings are folded in, the vehicle can be driven on the road.

It's not all bad news for the company however, as they claim the vehicle's breaking system compares to the top sports cars in the world like the Porsche Carerra and Cayman. The company claims that while being driven on the road, the vehicle can stop from speeds of 60 mph in 110 feet on dry pavement.

The vehicle's breaking system is mainly due to its light weight frame, small wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes. The Transition weighs less than 1,000 pounds without gasoline, and the vehicle's approximate takeoff weight is 1,430 according to Yahoo.

Over 100 people have already pre-ordered the vehicle. The company stated last year they would be revealing the expected release date by 2013, but now they don't want to make any promises.

Terrafugia has been considering producing another prototype before certification, but that will depend on the number of modifications they need to make to the current prototype.

"It handles really well, especially considering it's an airplane. It's fun to drive!" said Andrew Heafitz, vice president of engineering for Terrafugia to The Wall-Street Journal.
