Toyota hybrid cars have recently passed the 10 million sales mark, the Japanese carmaker confirmed. This is a cumulative figure and it includes plug-in hybrids.
Toyota was able to achieve this new milestone in just a span of nine months after the company was able to reach the nine million mark in April 2016.
"Hybrids remain an important part of our lineup of vehicles, with over 246,000 units sold last year, and we have seen continued demand with the release of the RAV4 Hybrid variant of the popular compact SUV, accounting for nearly 13 percent of its total sales volume in 2016," Toyota Motor North America senior vice president of automotive operations Bob Carter said in a statement acquired by Yahoo,
Electric vehicles, including Toyota hybrid cars, are seeing an uptick in global sales, and Toyota is not the only carmaker that is cashing in on this growing industry. Statistics have shown that since the first Prius was released in 1997, sales of hybrid cars have continued to grow. Experts predict that by 2020, the market share of hybrid cars will grow by 20 percent.
Experts said that the reason for the growing interest towards Toyota hybrid cars and environment friendly vehicles as a whole is due to the global effort of lowering emissions. Countries are also starting to offer incentives and tax cuts for consumers who are buying electric or hybrid vehicles.
In the United States, Toyota hybrid cars and Lexus models have sold more than 300 million units of hybrid cars. In the United Kingdom, the two automakers account for at least 250,000 units of hybrid car sales. The two automakers claim that this figure has contributed to the reduction of as much as 77 million tons of carbon dioxide emission, as well as saving close to eight million gallons of gas, according to Engadget.
Experts agree that this latest milestone concerning Toyota hybrid cars is a monumental win for the growing effort of conserving the planet by adopting greener and more environmental friendly cars.
