The 2018 Nissan Leaf is the second generation of the Japanese automaker's all-electric hatchback. Most recently, the newest prototype was just spotted.
What to Expect. Car and Driver reported that the next generation of the Nissan EV will offer buyers a choice of new battery packs, as well as provide a driving range of well over 200 miles. This is similar to what is provided by the Chevy Bolt and what the Tesla Model 3 is expected to do.
The new Leaf is expected to have much better styling. The Japanese automobile manufacturer will scrap the vertical tail lamps, which is one of the most distinctive design points that are disliked by many. Moreover, the IDS concept shown in 2015 will serve as its inspiration. The EV will sport a V-motion grille, a possible floating roof design, and sleek body-side sculpting.
Significance. The first generation Nissan Leaf was introduced in 2010. The Leaf was due for a redesign considering that it is one of the oldest designs among the electric cars in the market.
Motor Authority noted that nearly all its rivals have overtaken the Leaf. The latest version only has 107 miles of range and is priced above $30,000. The Chevy Bolt offers more than double the range and is similarly priced. This is also lower than the BMW i3 and the Hyundai Ioniq Electric.
Platform and Powertrain. The second-generation Leaf is built on an evolution of the original EV's platform. It will have structural changes which will allow the use of a modular battery pack architecture. Additionally, the new Nissan Leaf will offer improved power flow management and battery temperature to serve the needs of users in extreme climates better.
The Japanese automaker has also been proactive about DC fast charging. The world can expect the top version to be compatible with the 150-kW fast chargers, which will give the Leaf a substantial advantage of the Chevy Bolt.
The new EV's electric motor/generator will also have the same amount of power as its predecessor. It will also have 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, as well as being front-wheel drive. It is also expected to have probably three battery packs from 40 kWh to 60 kWh.
Release Date and Price. The new Leaf is expected to arrive in January 2018. It will have a starting price tag in the low-$30,000 range.
