Obama's approval rating is also down six points compared to this time in December, and is down 62 percent compared to 2009 when he was set to take office for the first time.

Compared to this time last year however, his approval rating is actually slightly higher, as the first poll of 2012 showed 47 percent of Americans approved of the president according to CBS.

Through 2010 and 2011, Obama's approval rating was right around 50 percent, but increased to 57 percent in May 2011, just after the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The most recent poll shows that Americans weren't swayed away due to the fiscal cliff negotiations as 46 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama oversees the U.S. economy.

Around 51 percent of Americans feel that Obama is doing a good job handling the gun control crisis and feel he'll be able to institute a reasonable solution according to CBS.

When former President George W. Bush was entering his second term in the oval office, he had an approval rating of 49 percent. Likewise, President Bill Clinton entered his second term with an approval rating of 60 percent, and President Ronald Reagan had a rating of 62 percent.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points according to Yahoo.

The poll was conducted from Jan. 11-15 when approximately 1,110 people were surveyed nationwide over the phone. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones.
