The current model of the Dodge Charger Pursuit is one mean-looking patrol vehicle. It is already a fully equipped car on its own but the FCA doesn't quite think so. In fact, it just made it a little bit smarter.
The 2017 Dodge Charger Pursuit and the Officer Protection Package. The FCA has teamed up with Californian firm InterMotive to supply all patrol forces with 2017 Charger Pursuits with a security device called the Officer Protection Package at no cost at all.
InterMotive is one of the leading designers and manufacturers of control systems. The system can be used on a wide range of vehicles such as work trucks, fire trucks, transit vehicles, paratransit vehicles, and police patrol cars.
The Officer Protection Package is designed to alleviate awareness and safety for an officer. The technology is basically movement detection through the use of radar and cameras. The aim is to prevent situations where an officer is ambushed from the rear of his vehicle while parked.
The Office Protection Package works well with a rear-mounted camera and parking sensors. One just needs to plug the device into the OBDII port of the vehicle which is located under the driver side dash near the hood release lever to start using it.
The device can be manually switched on and off and when activated, a sound will alert the patrol officer when someone is detected behind the vehicle. The vehicle's taillights will flash, the doors will lock, and the windows will roll up simultaneously.
There's a big possibility that it could get quite annoying especially when set off accidentally. However, it has such a big potential in saving officers from possible injury or even death.
It isn't clear how much exactly the Officer Protection Package would cost for earlier models of Dodge Charger Pursuit. This is because the FCA and InterMotive have only announced it free of cost for the 2017 model only.
