Tesla has just released the real-time Supercharger availability charger data promised by Elon Musk last April. This feature will enable Model S drivers to know the number of Supercharger stations that are occupied or available. Tesla owners can access the information through the map app on the center screen.
This development is a big help for Tesla drivers so they can find alternative charging stations during peak hours or long distance travels. A firmware update introduced "Live Status" to electric vehicle's navigation system. The upgrade allows drivers to determine which stations within range have open stalls.
The announcement on the latest feature first appeared on the Tesla Motors Club forum. Drivers were quick to gain knowledge of the update and posted map photos showing Supercharger stations and their availability.
People can avoid longer wait times at Superchargers because of this very useful tool. Tesla made the update to be compatible with its other programs including the Supercharger Credit program. The Elon Musk company always aims to improve the Supercharger network by adding more stalls and the new idle fee.
The $0.40/minute idle fee for Superchargers is one of Tesla's initiatives to incentivise owners to move when charging is over. The idle fee came about in response to drivers who use Supercharger spots as parking spaces. This program has only one goal, and that is to increase Supercharger availability.
Tesla drivers welcomed the release of the new feature. However, some reported inaccuracies between what the map shows and what they see at the station. They highlighted the two minutes latency in updating information on the status of the Supercharger stalls.
Tesla is deadly serious to reduce the traffic congestion at it Supercharger network. The electric vehicle company is adding more stalls this year. Currently, the Palo Alto firm has 4,800 supercharging stations around the world. It wants to double that numbers by the end of this year.
