Audi has been working on autonomous driving research for a while now, even displaying their 2010 Audi TTS Pikes Peak with autonomous features at many auto shows around the world. The vehicle was developed by the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Lab in Silicon Valley and Stanford University according to Audi.
Audi predicts that autonomous vehicles are the way of the future, as motorists will be able to control vehicles like pilots control auto-pilot jetliners. Vehicles will be able to drive and park themselves, but if needed a person could take over the controls.
Autonomous vehicles must have a special license plate issued from the state of Nevada to be allowed on public roads. Companies that wish to obtain a license have to submit an application package and provide the proper documents proving that the vehicle has been tested for at least 10,000 miles according to MotorAuthority.com.
