The Tesla Model S got a recent update. According to the company's CEO, Elon Musk, the early tests of the Model S P100D's latest Ludicrous Mode were "promising." So promising that it was able to go 0-60mph in 2.34 seconds.
Motor Trend tested Tesla's current top of the line. With the Silicon Valley company's latest update, Motor Trend put the electric vehicle to the test. The results were nothing short of astonishing.
The 4,891-pound Tesla Model S P100D was able to go from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.3 seconds. The range-topping electric vehicle was able to do it in 2.275507139 seconds to be exact. That's the fastest time to be seen on a production car in history.
However, Tesla only holds the advantage until 60 mph because higher speeds eventually favor horsepower over instant torque. The Ferrari LaFerrari takes 70 mph a tenth of a second quicker than the electric vehicle. Moreover, the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 also pull ahead at the 80 mph mark and continue to pull away at higher speeds. But at the 0 - 60 mph mark, The P 100D is the new king in town.
Furthermore, a Tesla Model S with full gear and driver will weigh about 5,062 pounds. Launching this electric vehicle in full-on Ludicrous Easter-egg mode will snap the driver's body in a manner that no other street-legal production car with standard tires and dry asphalt at a mid-$100,000 price point can do.
The automotive website further reports that they have regarded 0 to 30 mph acceleration times as their benchmark for how "hard" car launches. The Tesla with the latest update gets 0.05 second ahead of the next quickest 911 Turbo S which got 0.92-second. At 40 mph, the Tesla pulls ahead and maintains a 0.2-second lead from 60 mph until 90 mph. At the quarter-mile mark, the two are neck and neck at 10.5 seconds. At this point, the electric vehicle is running 125 mph while the Porsche is traveling 6.8 mph faster.
Tesla Model S has just gotten even more impressive. It will undoubtedly continue to wow the world if Musk can fulfill his promise of fully autonomous vehicles by the end of the year. With the launch of the highly anticipated Tesla Model 3, the Silicon Valley company may even get more interesting.
