The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety put 4 electric vehicles to the test for safety. They were looking for small overlap frontal crash, a moderate overlap frontal crash, side impact, roof strength, the head restraints, headlights and advanced frontal crash prevention. Chevy Volt, Prius Prime, BMW i3 and Tesla Model S were all subjected to the tests with Tesla and BMW scoring the lowest points.

According to CNBC, on the electric vehicle crash test that was conducted by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Tesla’s Model S and BMW i3 did not get the highest rating. The safety seatbelt of Model S allowed the dummy’s torso to move too far forward so the dummy’s head hit the steering wheel through the airbag. On top of that, the IIHS also raised concerns about leg injuries for drivers involved in small overlap front crashes.

However neither of the injuries were high and they are not life threatening, but they are too high to get good ratings for those body regions. Tesla is committed to making the world’s safest cars, and they do not believe the tests reflect the safety record of the Tesla Model S. They have made some production changes to the Model S to improve its ability to protect the passengers, and the updated model will be tested by IIHS.

Business Insider also reported that the roof of the Model S P100D wasn’t strong enough to ensure safety in a rollover, due to the car’s weight. BMW i3 also scored low on the electric vehicle crash test conducted by IIHS. It received its acceptable rating in head restraint and seat evaluation, which measure how the vehicle will do protecting against neck injuries in a rear crash. BMW i3 will be put to test again once the BMW engineers have improved the crash protection of the seats. Chevy Volt and the Prius Prime plug in scored higher on the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s tests.
