The 2018 Subaru Legacy is one of the cars that will make its debut when the Chicago Auto Show 2017 kicks off this week. Subaru revealed its refreshed sedan ahead of its official debut and the updates are noteworthy.
The Legacy received a midcycle refreshing for the 2018 model year. Among the notable updates Subaru made to its sedan include slight new styling to its exterior, a new premium and more comfortable interior, and of course additional tech, keeping the vehicle up to date.
Similar to the 2017 model, the 2018 Subaru Legacy comes with a base 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder engine capable of producing 175 horses and 174 lb-ft of torque. For those wanting a faster sedan, they can opt for the 3.6-liter flat six-cylinder engine producing 256 horses.
Other than Porsche, Subaru also has kept the flat-six engine alive in its manufactured vehicles. Digital Trends reports that all 2018 Subaru Legacy variants are equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This is the company's time-tested symmetric AWD system. The refreshed sedan will also come with active torque vectoring. The electric power steering system and the different dampers have been retuned for improved comfort and roll resistance.
The exterior of the sedan looks much sporty compared with the previous model. The minor tweaks include a revised C-shaped LED daytime running lights, a broader, lower grille, and of course a reshaped bumper. The rear fascia has been designed to look wider and the exhaust has a new tip design, according to CNET.
Meanwhile, the interior is a whole different story. Subaru designed the refreshed sedan to be a little bit quieter and with better built. Using more streamlined mirrors, engineers were able to reduce the wind noise. The HVAC system and controls have been revamped, making sure that the cabin quickly cools. There is also an easier-to-read clock.
To keep the 2018 Subaru Legacy up to date, the infotainment system has also been updated. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system runs Subaru's StarLink with Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto. A new application called eBird provides info about local birds and where to find them, which could be helpful if you love birds that much. Magellan Navi, Yelp, and Best Parking are also part of the infotainment system.
For more tech-inclined buyers, a new improved voice-recognition feature furnished by Nuance is an option but of course with additional cost, although this comes with a powerful processor to curb lag time. Rear passengers get to enjoy a pair of USB charging ports for the 2018 sedan.
The 2018 Subaru Legacy will go on sale by summer. There will be four trim levels: base, sport, premium, and limited, with only the high-end model, comes with a flat-six. But how the refreshed sedan will cost is yet to be officially unveiled by Subaru.
