2015-2017 Nissan Altima Recall: Over 341,000 Vehicles Have Rear Door & Latch Problem

If you own a 2015-2017 Nissan Altima, you might want to reconsider allowing someone to sit in the rear passenger seats. Nissan has been forced to recall over 341,000 vehicles from these model years in the United States. It appears that there is an issue with the rear window that causes the door to suddenly open.

The midsized sedans that were in question were manufactured between Sept. 17, 2015, and Oct. 6, 2016, reports CNET. The recall notice was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last Jan. 18.

According to the NHTSA defect bulletin reported by The Car Connection, "During the trim panel installation process in the subject Altima vehicles, the latch-lock cable may not have been routed properly in the rear door.... In certain situations, the cable may interfere with the window regulator causing the rear passenger door to unlatch and inadvertently open when the mechanism is lowered to open the window."

This means that when the mentioned interference happens in any 2015-2017 Nissan Altima, then the rear passenger door could possibly open if the switch to lower the window is pressed. Obviously, cars running at full speed and a sudden door opening would spell disaster, how much more if there are children on board, who usually as seated in the rear.

A solution to the 2015-2017 Nissan Altima issue is not that complicated. Nissan dealers will need to add a harness protector patch to permit proper cable routing. Also, they might need to replace the latch-lock cable assembly and door sealing screen.

Like all other recalls that have been submitted, 2015-2017 Nissan Altima owners will receive a first-class email notification from the company. However, Nissan has not given out a specific timetable as to when this would be. But they did promise that within the next couple of months, they will notify owners and cable routing will be free in dealerships for all affected 2015-2017 Nissan Altima.
