Sony has recently announced that that the latest update to the PS4 system software will bring external hard disk drive support to the celebrated gaming console. Update 4.50 will allow users to install applications directly to an external hard drive instead of the console's internal storage along with other new user-centric features.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50. It is always easy to upgrade external hard drives. What is inconvenient is a full internal storage. Users will no longer need to be concerned about their console's storage space with the new update from Sony.

Update 4.50 brings with it external hard disk drive support allowing users to just plug in a USB 3.0 HDD into the console. The update makes the console compatible with external HDDs of up to 8 terabytes in size. Users will be able to download and install applications directly into to the external HDD and still be able to manage saved game data via the user-friendly settings menu.

Applications stored in the external HDD will show up on the console's Home Screen via the Content Launcher. This makes it very easy to keep track of installed and recently launched application.

Aside from external HDD support, update 4.50 brings a less-intrusive quick menu which Sony says is to keep players in the game and not in menus, a simplified notifications list that will make managing notifications easier, the ability to set custom wallpapers on the console's Home Screen such as in-game screenshots, and the ability post directly onto the PlayStation Network Activity Feed regardless of where you are on the console.

One particular feature that stands out is the ability to play 3D movies. The update allows users who have PlayStation VR to play 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D on the PS VR headset.
