Apple Watch Granted Patent For Battery Charging Wrist Band; New Design In The Works

Apple finally received a patent for a battery charger band that will extend the battery life of the Apple Watch. This is because a long battery life is one of the most desirable features of any smartwatch and Apple wants to extend that feature.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office described the device as "wearable power apparatus" and titled the patent as "Charging apparatus for wearable electronic device". The device is to be worn on the wrist to be used to charge the battery of a wrist watch which naturally would be the Apple Watch.

As reported by MacRumors, the wearable battery charger can transmit power to the watch through the technology similar to the magnetic charging system currently used for the Apple Watch. The patent includes the failsafe system that prevents the device from heating up, making sure there is no danger or discomfort to the user.

Also described in the patent are two different ways that the device can be used. It can be worn in the inner part of the wristband that holds the watch and it can also be used directly right under the chassis of the watch.

Last year, Apple had published patents for similar bands which were named "Modular functional band links for a wearable device." Those bands were designed to function as access mechanisms for wireless charging and GPS receivers.

The new patent is solely for providing added life to the Apple Watch, a feature that can give the product an added marketing advantage against competitors. In a recent report by 9to5Mac, illustrations of the device show that it is circular in shape which is contrary to the current rectangular shapes of the current models of Apple watch.

Producing a round-shaped Apple Watch is not yet likely although Apple already submitted a patent for a circular Apple Watch. Apple will still concentrate on the rectangular-shaped watches as they celebrate the newly patented wearable device that can extend the battery life of the Apple Watch.
