Pros and Features. Both the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are five-passenger midsize SUVs. The Grand Cherokee is one of Jeep's better-known models. It has a good line-up of powerful and practical engines which really sets it apart. This includes a base 3.6-liter V6 in gas and diesel with great fuel economy especially for the latter and a 5.7-liter V8 with great towing capacity.
On the other hand, the Cherokee's engines are one of its weak sides. However, the V6 option is definitely worth upgrading to as it greatly improves the ride quality even on rougher driving surfaces.
Both vehicles also have upscale amenities and high-tech options. However, the Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts a better interior over the Cherokee.
Cons. The Jeep Cherokee has sluggish acceleration with its four-cylinder engine and it has less cargo capacity considering its smaller size. The Grand Cherokee's diesel engine is noisier especially when idle and at low speeds. Additionally, it has a disappointing ride quality, even with air suspension.
Models. The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in five different models: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit. The Cherokee also comes in five different models: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, Limited, and Overland.
The base Jeep Cherokee has some good tech features but the base Grand Cherokee is definitely the better option considering its powerful engine. The top of the line Grand Cherokee Summit has a luxury option, amazing tech, and full off-road features. The top of the line Cherokee Overland also has decent features like an impressive sound system and other upgraded tech and comfort features.
Price. The base Sport model of the Cherokee starts at $26,400 while the range-topping Overland goes for $42,990. The base model for the Grand Cherokee goes up to $33,690 while the range-topping Summit goes up to $50,495 for its 2x4 variant.
Verdict. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 2017 is clearly the more powerful and capable model, especially with its range-topping Summit. However, for those on a budget and who don't need the extra interior space, the Cherokee is also a decent alternative with the V6 upgrade. All in all, both vehicles are capable and reliable. Jeep did a very good job with their Grand Cherokee and Cherokee line-up for 2017.
