It's been five years since the famous automaker Porsche introduced the 991 series of their perennial sports car, 911. Just recently, it signaled the upcoming arrival of the next-generation Porsche 911 and spy photographers have snapped several photos of a test mule out on public roads. The spies reported that the new model is slated to debut for 2018.
The spy photos revealed two lightly camouflaged vehicles doing some winter testing and despite the lack of badging, there's no doubt as to what they are. The car has some similarities in looks to the current 991.2.
The vehicle's basic features such as round headlights, wide hips, bulging front fenders, distinctive roof and window line are said to remain on the car until the end of time. But on the new model, the headlights are tilted back and sit slightly flushed with the fender.
There have been reports that the next-generation Porsche 911 will be having the all-new modular platform that will not only underpin this particular model but also the next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman. The report adds that this architecture may also apply for the future Lamborghini supercars and the next Audi R8. And as car industries today have been focusing more on creating electric vehicles, it's possible that the new 911 may get a hybrid version.
Meanwhile, since the car is just a test mule, spy photos that show the car's shape is still far from its final exterior design. However, it does come with a modified bodywork that suggests some of the changes that might be used in the production version.
Furthermore, the test mule utilizes a set of wider front fenders lifted from the GT3 RS. Spotting the wheels fill up the arches, it shows that the front track of the vehicle has also been widened.
No details yet have been provided yet as of the next-generation Porsche 911's engine. But it is possible that the automaker will continue with the downsized and turbocharged route the upgraded 911 Carerra started. Currently, the Carrera is powered by a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter flat six engine with 370 PS in the Carrera and 420 PS in the Carrera S.
