Nintendo released a statement saying that the Wii U has ended production in Japan. Shortly thereafter, the Japanese gaming company has elaborated that the production of the gaming console has ended globally. Later, Nintendo of America has also confirmed that production of the console has stopped worldwide.

First reported by Kotaku, the listing for the console now included the phrase "Production End (Within Japan.)" While this doesn't come as a surprise to many gamers who were already expecting this to happen, it still saddens a lot of gamers, particularly Nintendo loyalists and those who really loved the console.

The console was heavily criticized for being a console for no one. While its younger sibling the Wii sold over 101 million units, the discontinued console barely sold 13.6 million units worldwide.

The console is still available at the Nintendo website here. The following bundles are available for $299.99: Super Mario Maker Deluxe Set bundle, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Set with DLC bundle, and Super Mario 3D World Deluxe Set bundle. The bundles include the game/games, Wii U console, Game Pad, Game Pad Stylus, Sensor Bar, adapters and cables, GamePad Stand, GamePad Cradle, and Console Stand.

On Best Buy, the console no longer seems to be available. When doing a search for the item, only a photo and availability of the Nintendo Switch appear. On Amazon, the bundles are also available with the Console standalone available for $222.64 as the best offer.

The Nintendo Switch is already set to arrive on March 3. Its pre-orders sold out within 2 days. The console has also drawn mixed reactions, but most of them appear to be positive.

While the Wii was not discontinued until a year after its successor, the discontinued console was killed off shortly after the big Nintendo Switch reveal.
