Microsoft Making Room For A New Surface Device: Surface 3 Is No More

The Redmond-based tech giant has completely stopped production of its Surface 3 tablet. The device is now unavailable for purchase on the company's Microsoft Store website.

Surface Pro 3 end of production. Microsoft is reportedly very busy working on its latest Surface device offering. It is only fitting to free up its resources to allow the production of a better high-performance 2-in-1 device.

It was during the middle of last year when the tech company announced that it will be ending production of the device. A statement by Microsoft in June of last year about its decision to end production of the Surface 3 reads, "Since launching Surface 3 over a year ago, we have seen strong demand and satisfaction amongst our customers... Inventory is now limited and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devices."

Microsoft recently revealed its quarterly financial results which showed a net profit US$5.2 billion and revenues of US$4.2 billion. The results noted that Surface 3 sales had plummeted which in turn led to plans to phase out the device.

The phasing out of the Surface 3 looks to have already taken place online. Visitors to the tech company's Microsoft Store website are redirected to the homepage after putting in a search inquiry for the device.

The UK Microsoft Store website still carries a listing of the Surface 3. However, the device is listed as "out of stock" prompting visitors to go somewhere else to purchase one.

With the Surface 3 no more, the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book remain as the tech company's only flagship products. That is until the release of a next-generation Surface tablet happens.

No official word on the much-awaited Surface Pro 5 has been received from Microsoft to date. There are, however, speculations saying that the Redmond-based tech giant will be unveiling a new Surface device at the MWC 2017.
