Interstate 5 has re-opened after a 60-car-pileup shut down the free way south of the California-Oregon border for almost 10 hours according to according to ABC News.
The crashes started at around 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 18 south of Highway 96 in California, and expanded for almost a mile onto Interstate 5. "We're having a hard time telling how many vehicles were actually involved in the accident or how many vehicles were just backed up," said Beth Cousineau to The Los Angeles Times.
California Highway Patrol reported that 16 people were injured, and at least eight people were taken to local hospitals for injuries. No deaths have been reported as of yet.
California state police have tried figuring out what caused the pileup since Tuesday but have not been able to come to any sort of conclusion as of yet. The roads have been a little icy for the past few days, which could have played a significant role in the pileup.
The area is still under a winter weather advisory and temperatures have reached nearly 20 degrees according to Weather.gov.
