Android 7.1.2 Nougat has officially arrived today. Google activated the release of the public beta of the new mobile operating system (OS) which will be first received by its select few supported devices. The unfinished software will be coming to those that are enrolled as part of the public beta.

Owners of Google devices such as the Pixel and Pixel XL, the Pixel C tablet, the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, and the Nexus Player are the having the OS update. Google will make available the builds for all of the mentioned mobile devices anytime today.

However, it is noticeable that the Nexus 6 phone and Nexus 9 tablet are excluded as recipients of the Nougat 7.1.2 rollout. This might signal the demise of both devices. Users can try the beta release by going to android.com/beta. A separate link is available for beta factory images.

The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 were introduced in November 2014. Google confirmed that both will not get OS updates after receiving Android 7.1.1 Nougat in early December and early January, respectively. Google assured the devices' users that they will still be receiving more security updates until at least October 2017.

The latest version of the mobile OS brings more bug fixes and optimizations as well as enhancements for carriers and users. The latest Android is just an incremental maintenance update, according to Google. This means more polishing and refinements for the OS.

Google will release the final software in the next couple of months. The tech company is yet to release official details of the mobile OS so there will always be room for more tweaks and improvements.

Users are advised to sign up to Google's Android Beta Program. The update is activated once they have ticked the necessary boxes. It will deploy immediately to their devices at the same time as those who were already enrolled.
