TCL Communications Technology recently announced that it would be giving the Blackberry its major comeback with their new Blackberry Mercury smartphone. The phone company revealed that it will be officially launching the device at the Mobile World Congress that will be held on February 25th.
The unveiling is scheduled a day before the start of the MWC trade show in Barcelona. The phone company gave the media a few photos on the Mercury back at the CES 2017 earlier this month but didn't reveal other additional details on the actual device such as the price, availability, and even the hardware specs of the device.
The new BlackBerry Mercury phone is said to be the third in a trilogy of new releases, following the release of the DTEK50 and DTEK60 devices, all made in partnership with TCL. The new smartphone will have a new radical design that looks to take its concepts from other flagship handsets.
In addition, the phone will also come with a new metallic build around a 4.2inch touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard allowing users to type out messages and emails. The keyboard will allow users touch-scroll across the keys to interact with icons on the display.
Some changes that were made on the new smartphone is on its front speaker that is moved to the top of the device, rather than the bottom. It's also equipped with a fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard's space bar.
Physical buttons on the side of the Mercury will have an Apple-esque makeover, with a smooth rounded finish that will make it much easier to select the volume, take a photo or turning off the device. As for hardware, some reports suggests that the BlackBerry Mercury will be equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3,200mAh battery powered by USB-C, 3GB of RAM, and an 18-megapixel main camera. The handset is also expected to run Android 7.0 Nougat.
The new smartphone will mark the end of an era for the legendary phone company. It was confirmed by the company's CEO John Chen earlier this month that the device will be the last one engineered and designed by the company.
